China's steelmakers turn eyes to logistics

In Jan-Oct 2014, China’s large and medium-sized steelmakers registered sales profit margin of only 0.75%. Under such circumstance, it is now urgent for the steelmakers to upgrade and optimize the logistics system, since logistics cost represents over 10% of the total cost.
In 2013, the domestic steel industry recorded the logistics cost of around 260bn yuan, accounting for 10.5% of the total cost, 5 ppt higher than the ratio in Japan.
Based on the full cost caliber of the logistics supply chain, the logistics cost takes up 13-15% of the total cost of the steel industry in China, compared with the 8-10% in the developed countries, indicating the huge downside potential of the logistics cost of domestic steel industry.
However, China’s steel logistics market is frustrating with multiple problems such as low concentration ratio, non-unified standards, roundabout transportation. Fortunately, the Chinese government has put forward the “One Belt and One Road” strategy, which will bring new opportunities to the logistics industry.
In conclusion, to adapt themselves to the modern market, Chinese steelmakers should make systematic and scientific plants to build intelligent, high-efficient, green and unified logistics management platforms.
